Why I chose Johns Hopkins: Because there is no core curriculum, Hopkins allowed me the freedom to explore all of its amazing programs (there's more to us than pre-meds!), and the relatively small size ensured me personalized support from my professors. Like many Hopkins students, I like facing challenges both in and out of the classroom, and the campus as well as the city of Baltimore make for a great college experience.

My favorite character from a movie/book/television series: Tie between Liz Lemon and Tracy Jordan, both from 30 Rock. I think I'm a perfect blend of both in real life.

Favorite place on the Homewood campus: I love sitting by the big windows in the Hut. It makes studying so much more bearable. And I enjoy taking naps under the big trees on the Upper Quad.

Favorite place in Baltimore: I'm a foodie, so of course my favorite place in Baltimore is a restaurant: Iggie's in Mt. Vernon. Best pizza around and the gelatos are just as amazing! The Charles Theatre is a close second because they play amazing films (and have really awesome decorations).

What I want to do with my major: I hope to go to grad school for public health and continue onto working in Africa or South Asia for either an NGO or multilateral organization. Being a Public Health major is a great introduction to the world of global health and development.

Coolest (spring/summer/winter) break experience: My parents moved to Tanzania, and I visit them during break, so my Christmas and New Years are spent in African summers. Beats biting cold winters on the east coast!

Three unusual things about myself:

  1. I have traveled to more countries than I am years old.
  2. I ate my first salad during my senior year of high school.
  3. The spelling of my name is derived from a family tradition that uses number-letter associations, so it's pronounced much differently than it is spelled (now that I've got your attention, it's pronounced SHAZ-neen).
