Why I chose Johns Hopkins: When it comes to biology and neuroscience, there is no university in the world that that has been as consistently productive as has Hopkins. I decided that I could suffer through questions like, "What is John Hopkin?" and "Why in the world was this guy named Johns?" in order to be a part of the most legendary congregation of scientific aptitude in the history of modern medical research.
Favorite class: My favorite class was Nervous System I. The nervous system is fascinating to me, and I am astounded daily by its complexity as well as by our ability, as a class, to comprehend even its deepest intricacies.
Favorite Professor: Dr. Stewart Hendry is, by far, my favorite professor. I've come to think of his lectures as events it would be a shame to miss. Professor Hendry is engaging, energetic, and brilliant, and his research papers are fascinating. If you get the chance to take one of his classes, don't pass it up.
The biggest difference between high school and Johns Hopkins that I've experienced: Your work is no longer easy. In one of the first Introduction to Neuroscience lectures of this semester, Professor Hendry said something along the lines of, "You were all admitted to this university because you found high school far too easy. You will not have the same experience here."
Favorite place in Baltimore: My favorite place in Baltimore is by the cannon on top of Federal Hill. If you sit on top of it, you get an unparalleled view of downtown and the Inner Harbor in an unbelievably beautiful panorama.
What I want to do with my major: I want to go on to earn a MD/PhD. Subsequently, I'd like to both practice medicine and conduct research as an academic physician.
Three unusual things about myself:
- I say "howdy" and "y'all". A lot.
- I read my professors' obscure research papers for fun.
- You will rarely find me NOT singing (or at the very least, humming quietly to myself).
