Why I chose Johns Hopkins: While the campus, the students, the close proximity to home and the research opportunities really pulled me in, the aspect that solidified my decision to come to Hopkins was the class selection. We have the most amazing and fascinating classes taught by brilliant professors.
Favorite class: It would have to be a tie between Jim Crow in America and Introduction to Cognitive Neuropsychology. And beyond the fact that I adore both of the areas of study, Professor Connolly and Professor McCloskey are both so invigorating and thought-provoking professors.
What is the biggest difference between high school and Johns Hopkins that you have experienced? If, as a high school student, I believed I knew how to time manage, I was so wrong. It is a different experience being in class for only about 10 hours a week and having to figure out how to do one's work and study effectively is a tricky balance.
What myth about Johns Hopkins frustrates you the most? That we are all pre-med students. I, personally, intend on being a pre-med student, but more students are not than are. Our programs in engineering, international relations, Writing Seminars, near eastern studies, etc., are so strong that they attract students who, in fact, do not want to become doctors.
Why I am glad I chose Hopkins: Being surrounded every day, all the time, by students who are motivated and excited to study whatever field they are interested in makes me even more enthralled with my own area of study and classes.
My ideal three-day weekend: I would fly to Montreal with my family and hang out with my aunt and her family. The days would have to include trips to my favorite Italian restaurant, Ferrari, and my favorite Mexican restaurant, Three Amigos, as well as Vieux-Port, Centreville and Place-des-Arts.
Three unusual things about myself:
- I was born in Algeria (a country in North Africa right on the Mediterranean Sea) and immigrated to the USA with my family when I was two-and-a-half.
- I could survive on chocolate, tomatoes, and orange juice. They are basically the best foods in existence.
- I often would prefer being in a bookstore than any place else: moreover, if you ever asked me my favorite author, I would never be able to give you an answer less than ten names long.
