Read my blog: Caught in Between

Hometown: Summit, NJ

Major/Minor: Public health studies (social science)

Current residence: Charles Commons

Campus involvement: Student Ambassadors, Orientation Volunteer, Phi Mu, COACH Tutor at Mergenthaler Vo-Tech High School, News-Letter

Why I chose Johns Hopkins: When I visited Hopkins, everyone was so nice, so funny, so genuinely interested in meeting me and convincing me to come here. Obviously the campus is beautiful, and the academic programs are amazing, but my trip to campus really had the biggest impact on my decision to come here.

Favorite class: American Bibles. It was a really cool, very small English class that I took spring semester freshman year. Everyone in the class was extremely intelligent which made for great conversations. Surprise bonus was the fact that the professor happened to be my high school English teacher's best friend from high school.

What is the biggest difference between high school and Johns Hopkins that you have experienced? Going to school with boys was a big change from my tiny all-girls school, but as that's pretty specific to me, I'd have to say the most dramatic change has been the hours. At 1 or 2 am, the dorm is still buzzing, sometimes with studying or homework, but more often with movies, TV, and conversation. Much different than any late night solo study session during high school, and much better, I'd say.

What myth about Johns Hopkins frustrates you the most? The idea that Hopkins kids are all work and no fun. Absolutely not true! I have yet to spend a Friday night holed up in the library, and I think if I were to do so, I wouldn't have a lot of company.

Why I am glad I chose Hopkins: From this vantage point, I can't imagine going anywhere else. It's a great school because you really become invested in it—everyone here is really involved, in and out of their classes, on and off campus. There's not a single person here that I've met who simply goes to class. Everyone volunteers, or plays sports, or teaches, or works, or writes, or whatever, but everyone is doing something.

My ideal three-day weekend: In an ideal world, I'd take the Amtrak home, trade my giant bag of laundry for my little sister, and take her to Hopkins for the weekend. I'm pretty sure, though, that my three-day weekend would turn out almost exactly like a usual weekend, but with even more sleep. It'd be a lazy Saturday, definitely. Sleeping in, a late brunch at Carma's Café with the New York Times and a big cup of coffee, hanging about campus in the afternoon and then heading out for a fun night.

Three unusual things about myself:
  1. My grade in my (all girls) high school started a wrestling club in the class lounge on Friday afternoons.
  2. I went to circus camp as a little kid.
  3. I'm distantly related to Winston Churchill and also Romanian gypsies.
