Class of 2010
Read my blog: Verbal Snippets and Snapshots
Hometown: Stamford, CT
Major/Minor: Neuroscience major; classics minor
Current residence: Off-campus
Campus involvement: Catholic Community, CSC Dance Program, Filipino Students Association, OLÉ Dance Group, JHU Classical Ballet
Why I chose Johns Hopkins: I was initially drawn to Hopkins by the neuroscience program. What sealed the deal was the fact that in addition to excellent premedical preparation, Hopkins also has plenty of humanities courses I can take.
Favorite class: Hellenistic Art, an upper-level art history course taught by Professor Koortbojian, who's extremely knowledgeable in ancient Greco-Roman art. That led to thorough, yet intriguing, lectures that not only discussed a lot of ancient Greek history but also showed us students how to recognize different artistic techniques whenever we look at visual art.
Why I am glad I chose to attend Johns Hopkins: I've made good friends, and I'm acquainted with many talented people. It's astounding how accomplished the student body is here! In addition, I've thoroughly enjoyed how professors and students I've met in all kinds of academic fields all have a thirst for learning.
Favorite spot on the Homewood campus: The Mattin Center, because the music practice rooms are there. It also has a cute little dance studio and Silk Road Café, which serves East Asian and Middle Eastern food.
My favorite Johns Hopkins memory so far: My favorite Hopkins memory to date is deciding with two of my roommates at the last minute to attend a formal being held near campus one weekend. It was like going to a high school prom, minus most of the preparation drama, jitters, and expenses. Plus, it was really amusing when we got to the formal, realized that we knew almost none of the other Hopkins students there, and ended up meeting a lot of people randomly!
Three unusual things about myself:
- I love to do piqué turns and pirouettes randomly.
- Before I came to Hopkins, I had a Catholic school education. The nursery school that I attended for both pre-kindergarten and kindergarten was run by Italian immigrant nuns; my parents tell me that I picked up a slight Italian accent and some of the nuns' mannerisms during those two years.
- I don't like adding salt to my food. I prefer pepper instead.
