Why I chose Johns Hopkins: Hopkins is a great combination of a traditional campus and an urban environment—being in a city was really important to me since it offers so many more opportunities than a rural setting. Aside from the surroundings, I chose Hopkins because it is a challenging school with a great community to support you. I knew I would grow here both as a student and a person and I have.
Favorite class: Power of Race in East Baltimore. This is an amazing class taught by Professor Shell-Weiss. It is the first effort of a project Hopkins is undertaking with community leaders to record the oral histories of east Baltimore. It is a neighborhood whose history has not been recorded very well so our class is going and interviewing older residents to gather their stories and experiences.
What myth about Johns Hopkins frustrates you the most? The main myth about Hopkins is that we are competitive and cutthroat. Competitive? Yes. Cutthroat? Definitely not. Any good univeristy has competitive people—that is precisely what makes it a school as good as Hopkins. Students here are primarily competitive with themselves, not each other. We are always trying to learn from each other and help each other out—it's definitely not a cutthroat environment.
Why I am glad I chose to attend Johns Hopkins: Because of all the people I have met here. My friends and classmates are truly amazing people and I can't imagine not having met them. The community here is a great one and I am glad I got to be a part of it.
My favorite Johns Hopkins memory so far: It has to be seeing the Hopkins Blue Jays take the NCAA National Championship in lacrosse by defeating Duke in front of tens of thousands of fans.
Three unusual things about myself:
- I pick the raisins out of oatmeal raisin cookies.
- I have seen each episode of The West Wing about four times.
- I have no idea what I want to do after graduation (and you thought all Hopkins students were pre-med!).
