Why I chose Johns Hopkins: When I was deciding on which college to choose, I was having a hard time choosing somewhere that would have a versatile major that I would like. I am very picky. When I found out about the Public Health Studies major, I was sold. Plus, I am a Baltimore Scholar, meaning that I am guaranteed full tuition for my 4 years here. I visited the school and was told universally that it would not be easy. I like a challenge and I liked what it had to offer—so the rest is history!
Favorite class: The African American Family, taught by Dr. McDonald. She is so down to earth and the topic is interesting! It's a 300-level sociology writing intensive course, but my interest in the subject has overcome my anxiety about the level of work.
What is the biggest difference between Johns Hopkins and high school that you have experienced? Everything requires much more attention to detail, so skimming information won't always work! Also, there is tons of help available, but professors need you to approach them first. In high school, if a teacher saw that you were having trouble, they'd approach you about it. Finally, I guess the biggest difference is that you're surrounded by so many intelligent and diverse students who have different passions, talents, and abilities. It can be overwhelming at times but in a good way. It motivates you to try something new or to further develop yourself—definitely a good thing.
What myth about Johns Hopkins frustrates you the most? That people here all premed and not willing to help other people. Yes, a large number of students are premed, but there are many, many other students who are not. Hopkins is great in all subjects. And I haven't encountered someone unwilling to help me. I know a ton of people to whom I can go for help if I need it—and they would do so in a heartbeat!
Why I am glad I chose Hopkins: Hopkins has so many intelligent, worldly students who have traveled from so many different countries, and are more knowledgeable than other people their ages. I learn so much from them. Even my roommates are international students. It's great! Also, this may sound cheesy but being close to home isn't half bad either—like one time, my whole face was hurting and I called my mom to take me to the dentist asap. Hey, being close to home works for some people!
My ideal three day weekend: Some friends and I would probably take a train to NYC to visit friends and family, then just explore the parts of the city [I actually lived in New York for nine years] I never got to see before. Then we'd drive up to New Jersey and go to the Six Flags there, then drive back to Maryland and just hang out in Ocean City, doing simple things like going to the beach, eating, playing Scrabble...
Three unusual things about myself:
- I definitely still watch Disney Channel.
- I hate the sound of flip flops.
- I have never visited anywhere north of New York or south of Virginia (hopefully that will change soon).
