Why I chose Johns Hopkins: Each time that I visited Hopkins, I encountered considerate, genuine people who were always willing to help out—the kind of people who I could imagine becoming my friends over the next four years. As an environmental engineering major, I was impressed by the department here which is not only renowned, but has a small student-to-faculty ratio.
Favorite class: Intro to Environmental Engineering, taught by Hedy Alavi of DoGEE. Hedy (as he prefers to be addressed) is an excellent teacher, and truly cares about our opinions and experiences as we learn the material. I mean, he asked us the first class if we thought it would be better to have two midterms or three. How many professors would do that?
What is the biggest difference between high school and Johns Hopkins that you have experienced? Probably the social benefits of living with the people you go to school with. My high school drew its student body from across our county, so we were never really near one another outside of high school.
What myth about Johns Hopkins frustrates you the most? That everyone here is cut-throat. It's simply not true—at any time of the day or night, our floor's common room is full of people working together to study or get homework done. People here understand that by helping someone out, you will learn more yourself.
Why I am glad I chose Hopkins: I have met people who I know will become long-standing friends. I have been enjoying everything I have been able to take advantage of here and I still feel like I could not have made a better choice.
My ideal three-day weekend: I'd sleep in, go explore the Inner Harbor or Towson with my friends, and then maybe knock out one of those books on my "books I'll eventually read" shelf.
Three unusual things about myself:
- I'm legally blind in my left eye.
- I'm an only child.
- At one time, we had seven cats at home.
